Hello from Washington D.C. (or rather a suburb outside of D.C.)! This morning we drove from Allie's in Silver Spring to Lauren's in Bethesda. After meeting up with Lauren, we all headed into the city for some good old fashioned tourism. First, we visited the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. It is an incredibly well designed and moving museum. We were only there for a couple hours before it closed but I could have spent the entire day there!

There are two exhibits that had a strong impact on me. The first contains shoes collected at concentration camps. This exhibit was particularly poignant because of the smell that radiates off of the shoes. The scent serves as a constant reminder that each pair of shoes actually belonged to someone who perished in a concentration camp. The second display that was particularly powerful exhibits individuals who aided Jews during the holocaust. Individuals' names are listed in alphabetical order according to country. Certain individuals' stories were described in detail. These people took incredible risks to aid and hide Jews. This exhibition confirms my belief in humanity. No matter how bad things become, there will always be kind-hearted, good people in the world.
