New vs. Old Sneakers

It is recommended that runners averaging 25 miles a week replace their sneakers every three to four months. While training for my half marathon, I realized that I have been running in the same pair of sneakers for four years. Immediately, I became paranoid about purchasing new sneakers. I wasn't experiencing any new injuries but I worried that if I waited too long disaster would strike. One weekend, I drove down to New York to visit my favorite running store: Runner's Edge.

I have been wearing the same style of Mizunos since I started competitive running in 2004. But when I got to Runner's Edge, I couldn't help but flirt with the idea of purchasing minimalist shoes. Fortunately, Runner's Edge gives you the opportunity to run in the sneakers before making your purchase. I quickly realized that I could not abandon my Wave Inspires. I purchased the new Wave Inspires 9 and started breaking them in.
My beautiful newbies!

After a couple weeks of wearing my new shoes, I started to feel an intense pain in my left arch. I stopped running for two days but the break did not make a difference. When I started running again, the pain was even more intense. I tried switching back to my old, worn sneakers to see if it would make a difference. Magically, the pain disappeared. I don't care what the experts say - I am sticking with the worn out sneakers!
My reliable oldies!
Have you ever experienced injuries after replacing your sneakers? Also, how long after buying a new pair do you hold onto the oldies? I know some people are a little intense with their sneaker hoarding...
