Women on the 20s!
Have you heard about the W20 movement? Women on the 20s (womenon20s.org) aims to convince the Obama administration to replace Andrew Jackson on the twenty dollar bill with a woman of historic significance. The symbolic placement of women on U.S. currency is representative of our values as a country and the efforts being made towards gender equality. The first round of voting has already been completed and you can watch the video below to reveal the four finalists.
Eleanor Roosevelt, Harriet Tubman, and Rosa Parks are all worthy competitors for this honor. But I will be casting my vote for Wilma Mankiller and here are a couple reasons why:
1. Andrew Jackson is known for his egregious acts against Native Americans including the Indian Removal Act and the subsequent Trail of Tears. There is a degree of poetic justice in replacing him with a Native American woman who advanced the rights of her people, both men and women.
2. Wilma Mankiller is a relatively little known historical figure. Until the final four were announced, I had never heard of her before. The other women up for election are well known topics of discussion in history classes. Having a little known Native American women on our most popular currency would push U.S citizens to recognize and research the original inhabitants of this country.
3. How awesome would it be to see "MANKILLER" underneath her face everyday? Talk about female empowerment! If we want a woman on the 20, why not go big or go home?
No matter who you choose to support, make sure to cast your vote here! Let's make women on the 20s a reality!
I agree! Go Mankiller!
