Road Trip: Day Four
Lexington, VA to Asheville, NC

This morning one of the fraternity brothers went on a rigorous ten mile run with me while Becca slept peacefully. He showed me the campus, downtown Lexington and beautiful trails. The campus is filled with gorgeous red brick buildings with large white columns. The entire town feels historical and reminds me of colonial America. Both the campus and the town were cute and homey but my favorite part of our run were the trails. Lexington has a series of trails that run along streams and rivers. The first trail we ran was short but brought us through the campus, along a small stream, under a bridge and over to the Virginia Military Institute. The second trail is six miles long and absolutely gorgeous. It runs alongside a large river where W & L students go tubing in the spring. A canopy of trees shades the trail from the sun and creates an endless tunnel to run through. I wish I could have run it in the spring or fall but even in the winter it was breathtaking.
After our run, Max, Becca and I walked around town and got breakfast. Then it was time for Becca and I to get back on the road! It took us about five and a half hours to get to Asheville. But along the way we had a little hiccup. About an hour outside of Asheville, the check engine light went on. Becca and I pulled into an autoparts store and got the car checked out. Fortunately, there is nothing seriously wrong with the car. But as Terryl says, "it wouldn't be a road trip without some car drama!"
We made it to Asheville in one piece and settled into Catie and Jesse's adorable little house. Catie made us a delicious home cooked meal! I was incredibly impressed with her culinary expertise. She made gnocchi from scratch and asparagus pizza! Spending the night with Catie and Jessie and their two dogs has been completely different from spending the night in the frat house. Catie and Jessie are real adults! We all sat around a dining room table, washed our own dishes, discussed our jobs and went out for dessert at the Chocolate Lounge. It felt like jumping forward five or ten years, even though they're only a year or two older than us.
I have greatly enjoyed seeing the different homes and family dynamics of everyone we have stayed with. I can't wait to continue our journey and meet more families!
