Fall Guide to Western Mass: Mike's Maze

Autumn in western Massachusetts is absolutely gorgeous.  Crisp breezes blow through the air causing brightly colored leaves to flutter to the ground.  The weather is perfect for apple picking, wandering in corn mazes and playing pick-up soccer games. But at the beginning of fall semester, students often forget to cherish the last few weeks of beauty before winter descends.

Last year, I missed autumn all together by hopping on a plane August 27th and entering South Africa's spring season. However, I didn't miss too much considering Massachusetts' autumn ended abruptly on October 31st with a 'snow-pocalypse.'  This year, I am determined to make up for lost time by experiencing and appreciating all that fall has to offer!

Here is the first activity in my series: Fall Guide to Western Mass!

Mike's Maze in Sunderland, Mass

Mike's Maze is incredible! Not only is the field plowed into beautiful works of art, but it is interactive! The thrill of Mike's Maze comes from navigating yourself through the field to find the cleverly hidden placards. Each placard contains a farm-related question. You receive points for every correct answer and are deducted points for every wrong answer. If you can make it out of the maze with a positive score, you get to take home a sugar pumpkin! (Words of wisdom: Bring a New Englander or farmer with you to answer those tough farming questions!)

If getting lost for a day isn't your style, Mike's has plenty of other activities to enjoy! There is a spud cannon, petting zoo and raceway for potato-related competitions. In other words, Mike's is the perfect place to spend a beautiful fall day!

  1. My favorite way to spend a fall day with the bugs! We have some spectacular fall festivals here in NoVA with patches and mazes galore! If you were here, we would visit them all!
